Hawkshead is a great base for visiting the popular hot spots of Ambleside, Coniston, Grasmere, Bowness and Windermere which are all within a 10-25 minute drive. Whilst the towns are great for going shopping, seeing local attractions, going to the cinema or restaurants with a wider variety of cuisines they can become busy in the summer time so I have a few tips for avoiding getting stuck in traffic.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Top Tips<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Buses <\/strong>\u2013 The 505 bus service is an hourly service that runs between Coniston and Windermere and can be a great way to explore the Lakes without the hassle of driving and finding somewhere to park. The excellent \u00a32 scheme is running all year so you can travel anywhere in the Lakes for just \u00a32 each! From Ambleside you can jump on the 555 service which makes for a lovely scenic route to Keswick with some of the buses open top for a more adventurous experience. Timetable<\/a><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Windermere Car Ferry<\/strong> \u2013 If you are planning a day out to Bowness, parking can be difficult during the busy summer months. However a nice option to take away the stress of parking, is to drive to the Car Ferry past Sawrey (5-10 minutes), park your car on the Hawkshead side of the lake and travel across the ferry as foot passengers. The Ferry runs a continuous service which sets off from this side of the lake every 20 minutes all year round.\u00a0(N.B) the ferry is weather dependent and there is a sign on the way out of the village on the North Lonsdale Road corner which will tell you if the Ferry isn\u2019t running. If the sign is not lit up then the Ferry is on.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
